英語家教屋

我想很多年輕學子都喜歡清秀佳人 (Lucy Maud Montgomery,1908) 這本膾炙人口的小說. 作者以細膩的筆觸詮釋角色人物, 既有趣又感人. 縱織的部份, 包括當時世代背景, 農場生活, 愛情, 家庭, 孩子的夢想等 皆躍然紙上, 每一情節都讓人覺得溫馨. 另一方面, 橫織的情愫, 有彼此的關愛, 女主角悲慘的過去 (Ann, 孤兒), 追求真善美的人生, 想像力, 面對挫折的勇氣, 樂觀的態度, 化解人際藩籬的真愛等, 付予該小說無盡的生命力.

我以部份情境教導學生運用適當的名詞表現視覺, 味覺, 甚至聽覺效果, 也可拿來比喻相仿的人事物. 舉例如下:

清秀佳人 以一位中年女性的名子及稱謂揭開序幕, 雖有點拘束感, 但也透出些許親切的氣份. 接著Avonlea 的美景隨即延著Avonlea 的 主要道路向下展開. 讀者彷彿聽到遠處潺潺湍急的溪流穿越幽暗的Cuthbert 森林, 一出森林, 突然鋪陳擴展, 像優雅的女士緩慢潛行的溪流, 經過那綠意盎然的凹地平原上.

原文:Mrs Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies' eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place;....by the time it reached Lynde's Hollow it was a quiet, well-conduceted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde's door without due regard for decency and decorum;....
